What Exactly Does an Occupational Therapist Do?
An Occupational Therapist is a professional who works with people across all age groups, from newborns to the elderly. They help clients accomplish the things they want and need to do on a daily basis by making use of therapeutic activities.
At TheraCure, we enable clients to live their best life by helping them realise their full potential and making them as independent as possible despite their injury, illness or disability.
- Therapeutic activities built around your daily life
- Goals agreed together with you and your family
- Maximum independence despite injury, illness or disability
An Example of How Occupational Therapy Can Be Used
Here's how an Occupational Therapist would help Mrs. Shah, after mutually agreeing on which goals to work on.
Rebuilding movement & daily skills
- Engaging Mrs. Shah in an exercise programme and sensory programme to help movement return to the paralysed side
- Training the weak arm to stabilise during bilateral tasks (tasks that need both hands)
- Working on the fine-motor ability of the intact hand so she can perform more complex one-handed skills
- Building her functional mobility: turning and getting in and out of bed, sit-to-stand transfers, pivoting and walking
- Training her to perform her ADLs using compensatory strategies (new ways of doing tasks) or adaptive devices, so she can do more with greater independence and self-reliance:
- Long-handled shoehorn
- Long-handled sponge
- Reacher
- Dressing stick
- Leg lifter
- Sock aid
- Elastic shoelaces
- Buttoning device
- One-handed chopping board

Adapting her home
- Re-organising the furniture layout around her house so she can move freely in a wheelchair and/or with a cane
- Adapting her bathroom with equipment such as a shower bench, raised toilet seat and grab bars, and training Mrs. Shah to use them safely

Further, customised goals once the first goals are met
Getting in and out of the car more easily
Better standing balance and gait to walk outdoors with a cane
Managing steps to enter her bank and other public places
Putting on her make-up with minimal help for social outings
Designing clothes with or without help from the affected hand
Why Does Occupational Therapy Work?
Occupational therapy practitioners have a deep understanding of their clients' lifestyle, abilities and limitations, related health issues, and social and family history. This builds a holistic picture that's useful in setting goals. An important focus during rehabilitation is adapting the environment and/or task to fit the client, and the reverse: preparing the client to fit the task or environment.
Outcomes are evaluated at regular intervals to make sure goals are being met, to update them, and to adjust the customised intervention plan. An Occupational Therapist also educates clients in work simplification and energy conservation techniques, so they can work smartly, safely and efficiently.
