Occupational therapy for Sensory integration disorders

A small, active kid will always get his/her clothing and face dirty while playing outdoors. However, what if the child doesn't realize he/she is dirty or doesn't feel dirt on their body or the child might be sensitive to having dirt on his/her body or having a runny nose more than normal, so even a small amount of dirt bothers him/her. All these are signs of Sensory Integration Disorder or SID.

Sensory Integration Disorder (SID) is a disorder that affects the sensory organs or parts of the body. This disorder is majorly found in children and can remain throughout adulthood. It is characterized by an increase or decrease in the sensitivity of one or all senses.

Children diagnosed with SID experience different sensitivities than normal levels. It varies from child to child, with one experiencing hypersensitivity to one Experiencing hyposensitivity. Therefore, every child has to be treated as an individual with unique characteristics and treatments.

Sensory Processing Disorder is a disorder of the brain that impacts the way that sensory information is processed. Children with this disorder often have trouble learning new skills and participate in everyday activities. They also may exhibit excessive sensitivity or sensory defensiveness, leading them to avoid interacting with other people and activities. This may result in agitation, anxiety, and depression. These symptoms can affect academic performance, social interaction, and emotional development.

The most proven way of treating Sensory Integration Disorder(SID) is through Occupational Therapy.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help in Treating SID

Sensory Integration Disorder is not very commonly diagnosed in children and is usually warded off by parents as something kids do. But parents need to recognize the signs of SID at the earliest.

Once you start doubting whether your kid has SID, it’s time to consult a professional OT(Occupational therapist). Our Occupational Therapist will perform a formal evaluation and guide you on how the treatment will proceed.

As mentioned earlier, all children are unique in their way, so it is important to plan a therapy revolving around the child in concern. SID is most commonly treated using Sensory Integration Therapy.

Sensory Integration therapy involves activities conducted by the OT which could help the child to get accustomed to sensory processing. These activities are presented as a “sensory diet” that helps the child learn to adapt and accept the sensory stimuli the normal world presents.

The OT for Sensory Integration(SI) Therapy may be a slow process, lasting from a few months to a few years. Still, if the programme is followed consistently, one can see rapid changes in the child's abilities.

Some types of therapies under OT-SI include physical therapy, vision therapy, listening therapy, Psychotherapy, speech and language therapy.

These therapies are based on the individual child and depend on which senses have been affected. It also revolves around many factors that help OTs shape the kid's specific sensory diets.

What are Sensory Integration Disorder in Adults

As we mentioned earlier, Secondary Integration Disorder can also persist till adulthood if the child is not treated in his/her childhood. Unfortunately, it is not a very rare scenario as many parents have brushed the disorder in children as something children do.

Therefore, there are cases in which adults suffer from SID. This disorder causes malice in their lives and even hinders their growth in everything, from career to social life and even personal life. It could also lead to serious repercussions for the individual suffering from it.

But this is also treatable. Adults diagnosed with SID can be treated by Occupational Therapy. The steps are similar to those mentioned for children, except it’s now the adult who has to make sure that the activities prescribed by the OT are followed at home as well.

Sensory Integration can reduce confidence and make it difficult for individuals, both adults, and children, to go about their daily activities. But with proper consultation and therapy from professional OTs, patients can live productive lives.
